Defeated

On our last day we wanted to do a circular walk around the little village of Butleigh, just south of Street. Armed with our map downloaded from the internet, we set off from the car park at Combe Hill and were soon rewarded with views like this...
Inca made a new friend ...
We walked through woodland, all fresh and spring like ...

We ate our picnic on a bench here ...
...  we could see the top of a memorial to a certain Admiral Hood who used to live in Butleigh.
We passed through fields ... with Glastonbury Tor in the distance....
We climbed over stiles, with Inca squeezing through the gaps at the side...
Spring flowers were all around us ...
We were having a lovely time ... until we came across this at the end of the field
We just couldn't get past this stile ... there was no way through for a large labrador! We'd already lifted her over one stile, but this was too much .... a double stile with a plank bridge and no access for dogs! We couldn't believe it ... we'd come so far and had to go back the way we came.
We ended up walking back to the car on a road like this.... with high hedges on either side

... so I can't show you the rest of the walk, because we missed the path through the cider orchard, and we missed the great cedar drive, and we missed Butleigh House, with every chimney stack a different pattern, and we missed St. Leonard's church .....
In all the times we've been out walking we've never been defeated by a stile before.... it was so disappointing!

  1. Oh what a disappointment. Maybe you'll get to do it another time?

  2. that is so poor! our large lab used to be scared of plank bridges so I used to have to carry her over them. I don't think I could have lifted her over those stile's either.

  4. Oh my! Such a beautiful walk that came to a full stop! A disappointment indeed ~ and frustrating! Lovely to see the cowslips and the lush green.

  5. What a shame! I wonder if the landowner was deliberately trying to deter dogs as they put their lambs there or something, who knows? Loooks like you had a lovely day nevertheless, lovely to see so much greenery!

  7. Oh, too bad you weren't able to finish your walk. But I have been enjoying reading your last several posts about your adventure. You are so fortunate to live where you do.

  8. I don't think it was the stile that defeated you, but the damn farmer's fence. Go back with wire cutters! ;-)
