A Lovely Day Out!

Today I met up with Diane from Heartshaped
and Lyn from Everyday Life
in a rain soaked Manchester.
Isn't Blogland a wonderful place ...
somewhere where the three of us from different counties could find each other, discover that we've got so much in common, arrange to meet up and become friends. I felt like I had known Diane and Lyn for ages!

First of all, we had afternoon tea at the The Radisson

Let's have a closer look at those cakes .....
... but, do you know we talked so much, that we didn't get round to eating any of them!
Imagine ... I don't think I've ever left a cake on a plate like that before!
But, not to worry, our waitress offered to box them up so we could take them away with us. We took her up on the offer!!!!

Later, we popped into the Stitchcraft Show at Manchester Central.
It was so good to be at a craft show with two ladies who love crafts as much as I do ...
and we ooohed and aaahed in much the same places as we looked at the displays.
After vowing that I really don't need any more stash ....
... I did give in to a few purchases.... but, it's OK, it's not all mine!

Worryingly for me, I splashed out on a beautiful Tilda book full of the prettiest summer ideas.

Look closely ... we each bought the same book!

The challenge has been set ... who will be the first to make something from the book?

Well, it won't be me ... I know mine will sit happily on the shelf next to my unused Tilda Christmas book ... and I will look at it from time to time and sigh!

I had such a lovely day, I really hope the three of us can meet up again one day!

Sadness

Today we heard the news that one of our dearest friends has died and we are all overcome with sadness.
Eric had never really recovered after a major heart attack eighteen months ago, but recently he had been doing so well and even had managed to travel out to his beloved France this summer.
He and his wife had been lovingly restoring a little stone village house for the past ten years and we would meet up with them every year to see what they had been up to.

He was one of the nicest, gentlest, kindest men you could ever wish to meet.
He will be greatly missed by all his friends
.... and my heart goes out to Sue.

A Bientot Eric ... no more pain xxx

The Story of the Field ...

Once upon a time, long ago, a man and his wife wanted to live somewhere quiet and peaceful, and they searched and they searched until they found a little bungalow....
Behind their house was a farmer's field ... sometimes it grew potatoes ... sometimes it grew stinky cabbages or sprouts ... sometimes nothing grew ... it was just left when the farmer was too busy to bother about it.
Time passed and the man and his wife had two lovely children and they didn't didn't worry too much about  the field ... they were far too busy .... until one day. .. as they were driving home they saw a notice on the field:

Oh my goodness, the man and the woman said, and so did all their neighbours, what will happen to our lovely view? What will happen to our peace and quiet? ... what on earth shall we do? Then a wise man from down the road came up with a plan - why don't we all buy the field ourselves! So the man and the woman and all their neighbours had to beg for pennies from their bank managers, and they went along to the auction and managed to buy the field for a lot more pennies than they were expecting to pay!
On the day the documents were signed a rainbow magically appeared in the sky and they were all very happy. It was a good sign.
Now the hard work began. The farmer had neglected the field for a long time and the neighbours had to hire a tractor to cut the long grass ...
... all the children watched from a safe distance
... the men and women toiled in the field for many weeks, cutting back the undergrowth and brambles ... until the day finally came to have a big celebration .... with a huge bonfire, and good things to eat and drink!
... the children played in the field all summer long and they all lived happily ever after!
That was 16 years ago when our children were 7 and 2 .... and we share the one and half acres with five other families. It is protected Green Belt land, so no-one could ever build houses on it, but we saved it from other forms of development. (The field behind the houses opposite us now has  flood lit stables).
Our children all  had the most charmed of childhoods ... free to roam in very safe surroundings. One family installed a swing at the far end, one of the grandads built the best den in the far corner, another father put up goalposts and we had a climbing frame. They hid in ditches and got very dirty. They learned about nature ... my son and his little partner in crime went through a phase of bringing us a series of dead things that fascinated them. Ugh!

We have badgers in the lane behind the field and there are always foxes around. As we are very close to the River Dee, which is a paradise for bird watchers, we have a steadily changing stream of winged visitors who stop off on their long migration journeys.
We've had birthday parties in the field, with team games and bouncy castles ... we  celebrated the Millennium together with all our families and had the most amazing firework display ... we've gathered again to celebrate the field's 10th birthday .... and we even had a wonderful party in the field for my parents' Golden Wedding
A few of us still gather round a bonfire on warm balmy evenings, with a glass of wine, watching bats circling above our heads.
We could live the Good Life and be self sufficient, but none of us have the time to do that at the moment, apart from one neighbour who is retired. He grows veg and keeps bees, and sells his honey locally. One or two people tried keeping hens in the early days, but Mr Fox won in the end! It was too heartbreaking for words. We all planted some apple trees which are incredibly prolific ... we are considering investing in a cider press for next year.

Sadly, some of the neighbours have felt the need to put up fences ... which is against our early principles, and the field is so maintained now the wildness has gone. It almost looks like a park.
But it still gives us the most wonderful view from our windows and affords us the peace and tranquility we were searching for all those years ago, when we first bought this house.... and Inca loves to run in the field as fast as she can on her way to her 'walkies'.
And the field gang?

They've all outgrown the games of their childhood. They now range in age from 17 to 27, two live and work away from home, one has travelled for a year in New Zealand, one works as a trainee engineer, and two are ready for university, one is still at school in. Year 13. I'm sure they will  remember the field all their lives!

I'm so excited!

Radiotherapy ~ Day 25 (9:05) THE LAST ONE!!!!!

I've just returned from the hospital after having my last treatment ..

I can't describe the feeling of joy I have bubbling inside me!
It's like Christmas, and birthdays and the first day of the summer holidays and everything wonderful all mixed together!

I'm going to do today's blog later on ... I just had to share my happiness
My Hopes and Dreams for the next 365 days

Well, my '25 things in 25 days' challenge is finished. .... and I've reached my rainbow after all the rain on the way!
When I started this I was on Day 1 of my treatment and I felt as though I was in a dark tunnel with no way out .... I couldn't see the light at the end. Blogging every day has given me something to focus on away from the hospital appointments and some of the topics really made me think ...
and none more so than this last one ... about my hopes and dreams...

I hope this treatment has worked ... everything so far indicates that it has been successful ...

I hope I can learn to live without the word CANCER shouting in my head when I wake up every morning....

I hope I will be able to read an article or hear a news story about 'someone else's cancer' without losing confidence in my own recovery ...

I hope I remember all the wonderful things that happened to me in the past 4 months and not just the bad things.... above all the love of my family and friends who have been with me every step of the way....the lovely people I met at the hospital ....
and the kindness of people who I didn't know at all, but now feel like my friends ( yes, that's all you wonderful people in blogworld who took the time to read my ramblings and left such uplifting comments of hope and support)

I hope that I can remember to live for the moment ...
that it's the smallest things in life that can give you the greatest pleasure.

I hope that my life will be back to normal very soon ... returning to work (normally not something I'd be too excited about) but this time it will mean I'm well.... (but I hope I don't get bogged down again in the daily grind).

And my dreams ... well, they haven't changed
I dream of us winning the lottery and buying a house in the Lake District ...
or near a beach...

... with a holiday home maybe in Paris
More realistically, I dream of a long uninterrupted summer holiday next year ... six weeks away with our caravan travelling through Switzerland and France.

And best of all ...
I feel that I'm able to have hopes and dreams for the future!

Whatever takes your fancy ....

Radiotherapy - Day 13 (11:30)

How are you feeling today?
Have you been feeling a little apprehensive?

I don't consider myself to be superstitious at all ....
but ...
I have worn my faith, hope and love bracelet
at every radiotherapy treatment so far.
It was given to me by friends at the start of all this,
and somehow it feels good to wear it.

My 13th day of treatment has fallen on Friday 13th
It's a significant day for me
because ...
now...
 I'm halfway through!
Hooray!!!!

I went for a celebration lunch with a very good friend,
we ended up spending 5 hours talking!!!!

Busy Days ....

I've had a very busy few days and haven't found the time to blog .....
How can that be when I'm not working at the moment and should have all the time in the world!!!!
We spent Thursday afternoon here ... talking through my future treatment and I found it all a bit upsetting to be honest. I think having the operation is the easy bit! Maybe, the reality of it all has finally hit home and, although everything is still fine and I'm in a very good position, I've got a lot ahead of me in the coming months. So I just need to stay calm and take each day as it comes.
Luckily, my friends from work arrived at just the right time to take me out for a meal here in Heswall .... at my favourite restaurant.... and I was able to forget my troubles for a bit. We had booked an early table but were still there hours later .... drinking soft drinks in the bar area. Chatting to friends really does help!
On Friday my daughter took me to Chester for the afternoon where we indulged in a little browsing.... and cake eating! Her boss gave her two days off work to come home and spend some time with me.
Wasn't that thoughtful? We've had a lovely few days together.

On Saturday afternoon a friend came round with two books for me to read.
They really need a whole post to themselves some other time.

The author has survived 5 lots of  breast cancer herself, and advocates changing your diet to fight back.
They've certainly given me something to think about.

Today we popped along to our local farm shop

and bought some goodies ....
....organic chicken and eggs, mushroom risotto, soya milk, green tea and two cordials to try out ....
I fancied pomegranate and elderberry and my daughter chose lavender cordial!
We were both intrigued by that one but haven't tasted it yet.
When we got to the counter we were seduced by the taste of these wonderful organic strawberries which are grown at the farm ...
They taste like strawberries used to when I was a child ...just wonderful!

Meanwhile my lovely boy has gone here ...
Barcelona ...

with 14 friends and their ....
.... skateboards!!!!!

I can't let myself think about it!

Overwhelmed ......

Every night my husband comes home from the school where we work together laden with more gifts and good wishes. We have so many flowers now we are running out of vases ... and my husband says this is what Elton John's house must be like!

This little box opens to reveal something very nice ....
What a lovely thought ... we're definately looking forward to taking afternoon tea over the summer. Our nearest hotel on the list is in Chester ... not very far away ... but there's a lovely hotel in Southport or some further afield in Yorkshire and Derbyshire ... so we can choose our destination later on.
Thank you so much Alex!

This beautiful charm bracelet is from the staff .... the charm they chose represents Faith, Hope and Love.
How very apt for my circumstances! They know me very well, because I love bracelets and have a huge collection ... but I don't have a blue one.
There were gift vouchers ...... one also from the staff  ..... and the other from our lovely kitchen staff.
Both are sizeable amounts of money ... so I will enjoy choosing what to buy later when I'm ready to hit the High Street. My first thoughts are for a decent leather handbag.
I think my own personal style consultant will make a trip home from the North East to advise me .... it is very useful having an elegant grown-up daughter!!!
We also have a massive amount of fruit to eat .... no excuse for not getting my 5 a day!
All these gifts have been accompanied with many, many cards ....
....which are filled with love!

I have been truly overwhelmed with kindness!
