The weekend was spent with my daughter in Newcastle ...
and I had another chance to visit the lovely Tyneside Cinema.
which is located in Pilgrim Street.... a two minute walk from the Monument stop on the Metro.
This cinema was opened as an art deco picture palace in1937 to show newsreels to the public.
Today, signs of its heritage are on display in glass cases with a collection of old film cameras taking pride of place.
We booked tickets for the evening and then had lunch in the Coffee Rooms which have been a favourite place to eat in Newcastle for over 70 years.
My green tea infusion came in an amazing contraption ... I've never seen one like this anywhere else.
The cinema has been lovingly restored, and the Art Deco details are stunning.
Later that evening we returned to see the wonderful 'King's Speech' in the cosy Classic room ... all comfy red velvet seats and a frilly red curtain that goes up and down like they used to in the olden days.
And best of all?
The cinema is licensed so we enjoyed a glass of wine, while Colin Firth excelled in his performance as King George VI ... how very civilised!

What a beautiful cinema. Lucky you for managin g to see the film. We hoped to go at the weekend, but the cinemas were all fully booked. Ros

Just the right era of cinema to match that of the film - looks absolutely wonderful and so civilised. No loud music and smelly pop corn I expect; glad you enjoyed the film:)
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to seeing this film, I hope you enjoyed it. The cinema looks wonderful, just the place to watch a film such as this.
ReplyDeleteI've left you an award on my blog. Don't feel under any pressure to accept it if you don't wish to do so, I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy reading your blog.
