A Phased Return

After chatting to my GP today, and my lovely nurse at the Oncology department last week, between us we have decided I can return to work. I am very fortunate that I will be able to slip back in gradually on a 'phased return'. I also realise how lucky I am, having had the luxury of well paid sick leave, I know others find the long months of recovery a financial worry.
We've decided I'm just going to do one morning a week during November and then add a few more days in December.
I'm forbidden from 'doing too much' ... a phrase that will make every primary teacher laugh out loud ... as the job just sucks you in and swallows you up whole.

So I won't be getting involved in the run up to the Christmas festivities ... no Christmas Fayre, no Christmas performance, and no climbing up on tables to put up the decorations. We'll see what happens!
How do I feel?
I'll be honest, last week I was very weepy whenever I thought about it  (but then I had a very weepy week anyway)  I'd be more than happy to never go to work again. But our financial committments won't allow that little dream just yet.

Today I feel O.K. about it all - which is a step in the right direction.
At the end of the day ... I won't know how I'll be until I try it. It might be just what I need  ... the final step back to normality.
I just don't feel like a teacher at the moment, but I know as soon as I get back in my classroom it will all coming flooding back! And there's also a class of Year Three children to consider, who will have to get used to a new teacher changing everything they've been been doing so far! Poor things!
So I'm going back next Tuesday ... I need to make the most of my last few days of freedom.  I've got some nice treats lined up!

  4. I am sure you will be welcomed back with open arms, and the children you know will have missed you. I know that the Christmas term must be manic but perhaps the hive of activity and usually happier atmosphere will allow you to ease back in without too much trauma. You will just have to pace yourself...honestly! Good luck I am sure it will go well, though no doubt very tiring to start with.

  5. That's great news from the point of view of getting back to normality! There are lots of us who feel just like you do though. I love teaching, but I would choose to not work at all, if possible. I can always fill my days with lots of lovely things to do!!!!! But yes, it pays the bills and I guess so little bit of me would miss it. Hope your return goes smoothly. Ros

  8. This sounds like very good news. It can always seem a little bit daunting going back to work after being absent for a while, but a phased return sounds like the perfect way to get you acclimatised. And, what a great time to be working in a school - children and Christmas are always a great combination.

  11. It IS a big step so you will feel weepie ( I feel weepie today about the state of my house & had a bad night's sleep so don't feel like making a start on the mess ! )
I'm sure the children will be very welcoming.
