This week we headed down to Tate Liverpool to see the new Magritte exhibition.
Rene Magritte, the Belgian Surrealist painter is, according to the guide booklet, 'most renowned for his mysterious imagery which combines the banal with the strange and erotic for disturbing effect'.
Some of the paintings were familiar, all bowler hats and pipes ....
This made me smile. I always tell my class that all teachers have eyes in the back of their heads. Being 7 years old, they usually believe me!
Things got stranger ... and some pictures were so erotic I couldn't possibly show you.
Some works were hidden behind a curtain for good reason .... we didn't linger!
I found that I couldn't relate to the work at all ... I found it all terribly flat, and just a tad boring!
I've come to the conclusion, though, that you don't have to like every piece of art, even if everyone else praises it from the rooftops.
I did quite like the blue sky pictures ... we have backing paper for school displays just like this.
I'll be totally honest, the only thing that got me excited in the whole show was this lovely umbrella in the shop .... wouldn't you just love to have blue skies above your head as you walk in the rain?
Sadly, at £55 it won't be me!

The umbrella is genius! I agree that is the best thing too based on what I have seen above. I'm a bit fussy art-wise and don't like most of it!
ReplyDeleteActually I like a lot of his work but you haven't shown some of the pieces I like. Somewhere I have a book of his work that is quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you -- the umbrella is by far the best idea :)
ReplyDeleteHI there, I have just discovered your blog after i kept seeing scavenger hunt photo posts in blogland! I want to join in now!
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely interesting blog. I too love all the things in your sidebar!!
i agree with you about the art,we don't have to like it all, after all we'd be a boring world if we were all the same and expressed things the same! but, yes, the umbrella is fab, and the best bit!!
Not my taste either, but I love the brolly. Bit out of my price range though.
ReplyDeleteSo say all of us, only the umbrella does it for me.
ReplyDeleteSome of the works take me back, too many years to mention, to my A level Art History classes - the lecturer used to was lyrical about Magritte,Dali et al - like you some I like and some I don't! Love the umbrella, now that would make going out in the rain bearable:)
ReplyDeleteThis is (or was) on our "to do list"!C is quite fascinated by Surrealism and has actually given a talk on it to our Art Appreciation group.I think his talks on Hockney,Scottish Colourists,Frieda Kahlo etc were better received.I just don't get it.
ReplyDeleteThe umbrella is great which is more than I can say for the so called art I'm afraid. I've never found it necessary to like things simply because the so-called 'experts' tell me I should:)
