Kathy's 2nd Kindle

Recently I've been reading a lot ..... mostly on my Kindle .... and mostly it's been a lot of froth and nonsense. When I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself I can't face anything that will upset me even more,  so there's been a lot of instantly forgettable 'cupcake cafes' and 'confetti' stories for weeks now.

However, now I'm feeling much better, I have really enjoyed these books which have a bit more substance than the rest of the nonsense.
This is almost like a haunting fairytale.
Another romance, but I found it just lovely.

A heartbreaking tale of the devastation caused by one reckless decision.
This made me cry in parts, being a mum of two young people myself.
I found this one a bit disappointing, after 'Me Before You' which I loved, but I stuck with it and it redeemed itself at the end.

I've still got a bit of a love/hate relationship with my Kindle after nearly two years.

For:

  • books are so easy to purchase with just one click without leaving your bed!
  • I usually only buy inexpensive downloads .... if I want something that's costs more I'll go to a bookshop and buy the real thing
  • I always look at the Amazon deal of the day  .... a book for 99p every day
  • STORAGE ..... I'd need a whole room to store the books I've got through lately
  • Convenience .... it fits nicely into my handbag for those hospital appointments
Against:
  • I'm a very visual person, and I forget what I've read unless I can see the cover
  • I still find it annoying having to 'scroll' back through the pages to check something out
  • I can't pass my finished books onto my friends
  • It will never replace the feel of a new book in your hands.
  • THEY BREAK .....hence the need for Kathy's 2nd Kindle!
I've just started reading
and it's shaping up quite nicely into a ghostly tale!

  1. I always have a book that I am reading. At present I am reading one by Kate Morton.

  2. Just got my Kobo (Smith's version of the Kindle) and have the same misgivings as you - but it certainly passes time on public transport! Glad you are back blogging

  3. Sometimes only chick-lit will do! I'm reading Winter in Madrid at the moment but it is taking me ages as it can be upsetting so some days I'm not in the mood for that sort of reading. Agree with all your Fors/Againsts about Kindles!

  4. The Snow Child has been recommended to me, and is on my 'to read' list, but I'm trying to get through the pile of books I've already got before starting it.
My other half bought me a Kindle for Valentines day because we just can't fit any more books in to our house (you can hear our bookshelves groaning). I too love the feel and look of an actual book, but I think my new Kindle is my book reading future.

  7. A Kindle sounds like a great option but I'm in a Book Club. Not the sort where they study books in a learned way but just where we swap books from a collection and give our comments after we've read a book. It provides cheap reading matter sometimes of a type I would never have chosen myself and thus is widening my reading horizons AND is a social outing where there is lots of chat and morning tea once a month.
When we travel I always start off with a book for the plane and swap it for one I find at our next accommodation which I then swap at the next place which works most of the time.

  8. PS. I am after The Secret Keeper by Kate Moreton. I hear it is her best and I loved The Forgotten Garden so there are two more titles for you to try.
    Hope you are feeling better.
    Cheers

  9. I totally agree with your love hate relationship with Kindle- I can never rememember what I've read either without a front cover. Your reading matter looks interesting- i might have to go and look for a couple of them:)

  10. I had a kindle fire just before Christmas and am getting to grips with it now. I've downloaded a couple of books by a local author who just publishes e-books so I wouldn't have been able to read her books in any other way. Like you I wish I could pass the kindle books on to friends. It still can't beat the feel of a new book though:)

  12. I'm reading at a rate of knots currently, always paperbacks I won't have a kindle, I need the feel and smell of a book. Interested to hear about the Helen Dunmore, she can do no wrong.

  13. I just found your blog through the Down By the Sea blog. I am the same way about reading during stressful times. I just can't read anything that is sad, confronting, or might end badly. There are times when real life already has enough of those things, and I don't feel the need to add more. (I have a grown daughter with two autoimmune conditions.)

I also have a love/hate relationship with my Kindle for some of the same reasons you do. I just got an upgrade to the new Paperwhite for my birthday, and I compared it to my old Kindle 3 in this post if your are interested. I love that I can now see the book covers!
