One of my 'should do"s for 2014 was to improve the quality of my reading choices.
I love to read. All my life I have had my head stuck in a book.
As a child I had a small treasured collection of books including some classics passed down from my Mum and Auntie..... Little Women, What Katy Did, The Railway Children and so on.
But books were expensive to buy so I voraciously read everything in my local library... counting the days till the next Saturday when I could go and choose some more.
As an adult one of life's greatest pleasures has been reading .... although when my children were small it was The Hungry Caterpillar and Frog and Toad, Where's Spot and The Walker Book of Bedtime Tales! As a busy working mum I could only really indulge in mammoth reading sessions on holiday, and I used to love browsing in bookshops and stashing away a collection to take away in our caravan each summer.
Reading kept me calm at numerous hospital appointments in the last few years, and I never went anywhere without a book in my handbag. But, I've sort of slipped into the habit or reading light weight nonsense ... nothing too taxing or hard hitting. Nothing sad and miserable. Lots of cupcake shops and romance in Paris. You know the sort of thing. Perfectly pleasant stuff!
Now, I have much more time available to enjoy reading but I find I'm still stuck in that place. A friend in work passes on everything she reads to me. .... and I take them home not to hurt her feelings. But as she says "Oh it's just the sort of book that you don't need to use your brain to read it!" She reckons that after a day teaching Year Four that's all she can cope with during term time.
Well, no more!!! I'm ready to start using at least some of some of my brain in 2014.
I've found a sort of on-line book club through Karen at A Quiet Corner, linking with Laura at A Circle of Pine Trees. You are invited to just choose a book each month and do a post about it. I thought I'd give it a go.
Starting as I mean to go on, right now I'm reading The Goldfinch which is a massive book. There's been a lot of hype about this, and the fact it's taken ten years to write. I'm more than half way through so I'll let you know how I get on.
Then out of the blue this week, a colleague in work was talking about a book club she belongs to. Joining a book club has long been on my 'list' of things to do so I've asked if I can join in too, and will be going to my first meeting at the beginning of February. Again it's one book a month, and the choices are already set. There's a few genres on the list that I would never normally select, so it will get me out of my comfort zone!
I'll have to do a lot less faffing around in blog land and get reading!

Good on you for joining a book club, I keep wimping out but I am joining in at Circle of Pines and will look forward to your review of your books.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I have never quite been able to get out of the habit of reading (it's a BAD thing sometimes though as I just can't get anything done in the my craving to finish a book! When I was in my second year of teaching, I discovered the Leminy Snicket books and I literally read one a night for 2 weeks after I'd got home from school. I got my marking and plans done BUT stayed up sooo late reading, I was really tired!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to do a book club. I was talking to my SMT team about it at school and we decided to start a 'children's book'bookclub at school and then we'd buy a set of books and talk about them, get ideas for guided reading and then give them to the school and we've have already done some work that everyone could benefit from!x
I feel exactly the same about my literary choices this year. I received a '1001 books to read before you die' book for xmas, I'm hoping it'll improve the quality of my reading material.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in with me! The Goldfinch is definitely the most popular choice this month, I've put it on my to-read list. Laura
ReplyDeleteI saw that book and wondered whether to go for it! Will be interested to hear what you think of it.

I love reading too- And will almost read anything- but there are certain geners i never touch- my list of things to do this year was also to push myself out of my comfort zone and read something different. I too joined a book club last year and love it- It's a great way to share different books and find some new authors.
ReplyDeleteI have quite fancied the idea of a book group, but know that if the book wasn't one I would normally choose, then I would resent feeling I had to spend time reading it, especially with fifty odd books waiting to be read here anyway! You are yet another lady reading the Goldfinch I see... I shan't need to read it, just read all the write-ups!
ReplyDeleteI'd always got my nose in a book as a child and teenager and loved my visits to the library and it was a great day when I could access the adult section too. I'm always reading one or two books at a time one book and one on kindle. I've just read a wonderful book called The Secret Rooms by Catherine Bailey (non-fiction) but so gripping. I've always had reservations about book clubs as there are certain genres I can't get on with - I don't like ghosts, vampires or time travelling things - I guess I am stuck in a rut really with my reading perhaps I should branch out. I've read Donna Tart's The Secret Histoy but not this new one. I'll look forward to reading your review:)
ReplyDeleteLike you Kathy, I grew up loving books. And also like you, I now find myself reading mostly lighter fare. I have to force myself to read something that is sad or bleak. In my case I'm pretty sure it has to do with all the years of having parented a child with severe health problems. It was all I could do to cope without reading about the sadness in others' lives. And again like you, I am slowly trying to add a more substantial book here and there. I've seen the Goldfinch discussed on several blogs and have been wondering if it might be one to attempt, but the size of it puts me off. I will be anxious to hear what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteHi - so just found your blog after you came to my page and reading it instead of making tea. We have lots of shared interests. Envy your trip to Warhorse. We're taking a school trip to cinema showing of NT at Theatre Clwyd in March but not as good as real thing. Enjoy 'The Goldfinch'. I might leave it to Easter hols. Reading lightweight at present - new Bridget Jones. All I can manage with mocks and reports. Sorry you've been ill - hope 2014 treats you better.
ReplyDeleteI love books too Kathy. I recently joined a crime fiction book club which I thought would make a change from the historical novels I've been reading. But - I don't like the reading matter at all, its completely out of my comfort zone and will not be going back. I'm not a lover of chick lit but its just a case of finding something that that suits my frame of mind. Good for you in finding your book club. Hope you enjoy it. x
ReplyDeleteI recently discovered books by Charlotte Betts and would highly recommend them. She sets her stories in the restoration period after the plague and the Great Fire of London. Her characters really come to life and I really could imagine what it would be like to be travelling by boat on the Thames along with hoards of other people. Good luck with your book clubs! x
ReplyDeleteBooks are the best.
ReplyDeleteI love my little book group, I've read so many books I would never normally picked up and I've enjoyed them which is a bonus!
